Module 3 website analysis

My chosen site for module 3 is Jungle .com

Description.

Jungle.com is an online retailer whose core business are technology products, focusing on computers, music, mobile phones and games. It is owned by Great Universal Stores who also own among others Argos.
This site is colourful but crisp and easy on the eye; it contains a lot of graphics but still loads at a reasonable pace even on a 56K modem.
The site opens with hot deals this is usually five or six special offers down the centre of the page, on the right side of the page there is a list of its top selling DVDs, games and music. The search facility, terms and conditions and links to the other areas (laptops, music, phones, software etc.) are down the left side.
Each item that is listed for sale as the price and availability shown, a click of the mouse takes you to information on the product or you can read the reviews from previous purchasers. There is also an image of the product.

How it can be useful to T171 students and relates to course material.

This site shows how a retailer can select what sells best online; if you apply the ES Test to any of the Jungle products they will get a very high score.
This site also demonstrates how the richness verses reach trade-off can be reduced. Jungle.com have used their knowledge of database management and catalogue retailing (learnt through Great Universal Stores and Argos) to extend their reach, and combined this with the power of the Internet and HTTP to add richness (peer reviews, pictures, information and customization etc.).

Conclusion.

This site is with its combination of peer reviews of products, top seller lists, information and secure socket layer (SSL) for payment and customer details, gives the customer a feeling of confidence whilst shopping. Just what a good e-commerce site should do. It also demonstrates a great deal of what as been learnt in module 3 (richness & reach, business to customer transaction grid, ES Test) so I think that it would be useful to T171 students.
